Many of you have written me,
commenting on a review we featured on Tech Talk last month about HardRockin80s.com, the online
radio station focusing on non-stop 80's hair metal. Well, many of
you have said, ‘How about those of us who love 80''s music, but not
necessarily guitar rock?’
Now I know I’m going to hear about it
from my headbanging brethren, but I'm a firm believer that man cannot live
by shredding alone. And, every now and then, I too, get tired of thrash
every now and then.
And 'tis true - it takes all types to make the
world go 'round, and as such, just for you, I'll profile a great site
highlighting great music from the decade of decadence. Those of you who
would be so allergic to nostalgic 80's cheese you might as well be lactose
intolerant would prefer a better mix of music than listen to four-minute
guitar solos and hear people screaming at the top of their lungs, singing
about lost loves and demonic possessions (much of the time within the
context of the same song).
Needless to say, this doesn't exactly
make for music that's very workplace-friendly.
So, if you can't get
enough of the 80's and its music, you have got to check out Weasel.net. Don't be put off by Weasel's
admittedly less-than-stellar user interface. The site's main attraction is
its online radio station, and what it does, it does well. The site is 100%
music, no annoying DJs, no commercials, no fluff. Just the tunes you
love.
In fact, Weasel's playlist prides itself on being eclectic,
meaning you can hear Pebbles followed by Flock of Seagulls, back-to-back
with Hall and Oates stacked against Depeche Mode. All genres of 80's
music, from new wave, pop, electronica, early rap, hard rock, and even
that annoying synthesizer music are featured and ready for you to
request.
In fact, the best thing about Weasel.net is the site's
interactivity. Weasel's library of more than 1,200 songs spans all tastes,
and contrary to many of its peers, features rapid response. This mean when
you click on a song to request it, the song plays within a few minutes,
not forcing you to wait around to hear your favorite music. And while the
site does every now and then experiencing some downtime, it is still
really cool for getting those oh-so-memorable tunes back into your head
that you'll be surprised you still know all the words for.
